A bacterial bloom is a rapid increase in free-floating bacteria that makes aquarium water look milky white or gray. It is common in new tanks and after a disruption supplies bacteria with abundant dissolved organic material.
Why blooms happen
New setups contain open ecological niches and unstable nutrient supplies. Overfeeding, a dead organism, disturbed substrate, or aggressively cleaned filter media can also trigger a bloom. The organisms clouding the water are not necessarily the same nitrifying bacteria attached to filter media and surfaces.

Is a bacterial bloom dangerous?
The haze itself is often temporary, but bacterial respiration can reduce dissolved oxygen. The event that triggered it may also coincide with ammonia or nitrite. Test both daily in a new or disrupted tank, watch breathing, and add surface agitation when needed.

How to clear it safely
- Keep the filter running and preserve established media.
- Remove uneaten food or decay and feed lightly.
- Use conditioned partial water changes when ammonia or nitrite is present.
- Increase aeration; avoid sterilizing the whole system.
- Allow time for the microbial community to stabilize.
